Getting started with Microsoft Purview

Microsoft Purview – like most Microsoft solutions – is both hugely powerful, but can be equally complex. In this short series of blogs, I’ll look to demystify Microsoft Purview, sharing some hints, tips, and lessons learned to help small and medium businesses manage their data in the cloud.

So what even is Microsoft Purview?

Microsoft’s tech stack can sometimes feel like alphabet soup – especially around security and compliance solutions. Purview is simply Microsoft’s answer to data governance and security. It’s a group of solutions, all aiming to manage how data is governed and protected in the cloud.

Purview solutions fall into three categories:

  • Data Security – discovering and protecting sensitive data in both Microsoft 365 and connected solutions
  • Data Governance – ensuring that data used in business processes is discoverable, protected, and trustworthy regardless of where it is stored
  • Risk & Compliance – support organisations in reducing compliance risks, and meeting their regulatory requirements

Striking a balance between security and usability is a never-ending battle for businesses of all sizes. Very few, if any, organisations are deploying every Microsoft Purview solution. At the time of writing, Microsoft list twelve different Purview solutions – of these, 8 are at least partially included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
